What makes a pickleball paddle good?
For new “picklers” or a beginner in pickleball, let me first go over what you should look for in choosing a pickleball paddle. There are a couple of characteristics that go into choosing the perfect pickleball paddle for your playing style.
Construction
A lot of people typically overlook this one, but you should actually read the little pamphlet attached to each paddle! What is each paddle made out of? The type of material makes a BIG difference in how each pickleball racket plays.
There are three main types of material used in pickleball rackets today:
Wood Composite Graphite
And each have their own advantages and disadvantages. Wood pickleball paddles are great beginner pickleball paddles because they are typically the least expensive. However, their weight is often a disadvantage. Wood paddles typically aren’t as agile or fast as other types of paddles because they are heavier.
Composite paddles are lighter compared to wood but often cost more. It is a price difference that is well worth paying for.
Composite paddles are made up of a mix of materials which is why they are called a composite. A common mix is nomex (A Kevlar-like material) and polyester. These paddles are typically lighter than wood paddles and more durable and built for pickleball. Wood pickleball rackets are ok if you just want to get out onto the court but composite pickleball paddles are much better for the difference in price.
Graphite constructed pickleball paddles are top of line. The use of graphite means that these pickleball paddles are very durable and tough. The pickleball will bounce off of these paddles easily and you’ll be able to provide a lot of your power.
Weight
Most pickleball paddles weigh between 6 to 14 oz which doesn’t sound like much but it can make a big difference in how you play. A lighter paddle (6 – 7 oz) will give you a lot more control but you will need to generate all of the power yourself. At this weight range, you’ll be comfortable swinging this pickleball paddle for hours even if you’ve never played pickleball before.
A midweight paddle (7 – 8.5 oz) is what I like to recommend to most people.
These paddles (in the range of 7 to 8.5 oz) are perfect for all levels of pickleball players. They make a great all around paddle with a good mix of drive and control.
Heavier paddles are something every player should experiment with but definitely not something every player should use regularly. Heavier paddles are harder to move around which in the fast-paced game of pickleball can be a one way trip to losing a lot.
However, if you have the experience and can compensate, you can hit some great shots using a heavier pickleball paddle.
I have an Upstreet pickleball paddle I bought in January 2018 and the rim is coming loose from the paddle. Is there any guarentee?
I don’t believe so but you’ll have to check on Amazon and message the manufacturer to be sure.
