How Tall Is A Badminton Net? (And The Net Dimensions)

Even if you are a regular badminton player, then you might not know that much about the badminton net itself.

This is a piece of equipment that is usually already set up on your arrival, so it is unlikely that you have ever needed to know the measurements of a badminton net.

Unless you are going for Olympic standard badminton, then this is likely something that you haven’t spent much time thinking about. 

Just by looking at a badminton net, you will know that they are big and tall nets. But, you will not know the precise measurements by simply looking at it.

Just like with any sport, it is incredibly important that your net fits the specific measurements required. Especially if you are playing badminton at a competitive level.

If your net does not fit these measurements, then it could be argued that any results achieved in the game are unjust, and you could be disqualified. 

So, how tall should a badminton net be? And what are the specific dimensions required for this net?

How Tall Is A Badminton Net?

You only have to look at a badminton net to realize that it is fairly tall. If you are a shorter individual, then you might find that the badminton net is the same height, or even slightly taller than you.

Whereas, if you are a taller person, then you might not think it is as tall as others make out. But, how tall is a badminton net, exactly. 

According to the rules of badminton, your badminton net should measure 5 foot 1 inch (1.55 meters) in height. This measurement should be taken at either side of the court because there should be a minor dip in your badminton net at the center.

So, on either side of the court, your badminton net should measure 5 foot 1 inch, but in the center it will be shorter. 

In the rules of badminton, it says that this dip should measure at 5 foot (1.52 meters). So, there will only be a 1-inch difference in the measurements of your badminton net at the edge of the net to the measurements in your center.

This dip is achievable because of the width of the badminton net. So, let’s take a look at how wide your badminton net should be. 

How High And Wide Is A Badminton Net?

We’ve already said that a badminton net should measure exactly 5 foot 1 inch on either side of the court, and 5 feet in the center of it, but how wide should the net be?

As we have mentioned, the width of the net plays a hugely important role in achieving this dip. So, how wide should a badminton net be?

From the left-hand side of the badminton court, to the right-hand side, the net will measure 20.01 feet (6.1 meters).

A double’s badminton court measures 6.1 meters in width, so in this type of badminton, the net measures the same width as the court. But, in singles badminton, the net is wider than the court as the court only measures 5.18 meters. 

We’ve spoken about the height and width of a badminton net, but we haven’t measured the depth of the net. This is essentially the thickness of the material that makes the net.

So, if you are putting up a badminton net yourself, it is worth noting that your net should measure 760 millimeters in depth. 

How Big Is A Badminton Court?

So far, we’ve focused on the measurements of the badminton net, but we haven’t actually mentioned the dimensions of a badminton court.

It is very important that you know the specific measurements of a badminton court if you want to play badminton competitively. It is also important that you know these if you want to understand why badminton nets measure the size that they do. 

A badminton court measures 13.4 meters (43.96 ft feet) in length, and 6.1 meters  (20.01 feet) in width for a standard doubles match of badminton. In a single’s badminton match, the length of the court remains the same, but the width of the court is reduced down to 5.18 meters (17 foot). 

But, no matter whether you are playing a singles or doubles match of badminton, the dimensions of the badminton net remain the same. The net is perhaps the most important part of the badminton court, so it is essential that the measurements of this are correct if the badminton match is going to be fair. 

Is A Badminton Net The Same Height As A Volleyball Net?

Finally, let’s wrap this up by answering one of the most common questions that people have regarding badminton nets. This is, of course, whether, or not, they are the same height as volleyball nets. 

If you look at a badminton net and a volleyball net separately, it is easy to assume that they are the same measurements as one another.

But, when you look at them side by side, you will realize that they are not. In terms of height, these nets are very similar to one another, but they differ greatly in terms of width. 

As we have said, badminton nets measure around 6.1 meters (20.01 feet) in width. Volleyball nets are significantly wider than this, measuring 9.75 meters (32 feet) in width.

So, while it might be tempting to use a volleyball net and court for a badminton game, you cannot do this because the nets do not have the same measurements.
